Canadian Right to Housing Research Fellowship Reports

The Canadian Right to Housing Research Fellowship program supported two independent research projects led by Brittany Cormier and Monika Imeri. 

Between 2023-2024, the research fellows each examined a topic that aimed to advance understandings of the housing landscape in Canada – one in the Capital Region of Prince Edward Island, the other in Ottawa. The reports below present the findings and analysis from their projects. 

The Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR) was proud to provide ongoing research support to each fellow throughout the program. The fellowship program was funded by the P and L Odette Foundation, with additional support from the Safe and Affordable Place to Call Home project for the completion of Monika Imeri’s research. Discrimination and Exclusion in the Capital Region of Prince Edward Island: A Case Study of Rental Housing Advertisements

Researched and authored by Brittany Cormier, this report provides a snapshot of Prince Edward Island’s housing affordability crisis, and the extent of housing discrimination and exclusion in the regions of Charlottetown, Stratford, and Cornwall (the provincial capital region). This study examined rental advertisements over a 22-week period from May to October 2023. The purpose of this study was to fill a gap in knowledge about housing discrimination, exclusion and other barriers to accessing housing that prospective tenants face in the preliminary stage of searching for a rental unit or room.

“Where are we supposed to go?” Lived Experiences of Displacement in Ottawa

Researched and authored by Monika Imeri, this report examines how rising rents, weakened tenant protections, and the financialization of housing have made displacement a defining experience for many Ottawa renters. Drawing on qualitative data from interviews with tenants who have experienced eviction and housing insecurity, alongside an analysis of eviction records and census data, this study examines the profound material, social, and emotional toll of displacement and showcases how displacement is an ongoing process that destabilizes lives, fractures communities, and deepens inequalities. By foregrounding the voices of those who have been directly affected, this report moves beyond policy rhetoric to show how housing insecurity is lived and experienced by tenants.
